“Are you not working today then?” These are the six innocent little words guaranteed to make my blood boil and my teeth grind!!….
…and if you are someone who works from home then you will know exactly what I mean. Working from home can be for those who do it, one of the biggest challenges to managing your time
. There are no stationary cupboards to lurk in, no meetings somewhere else in the building to go to or factory floors to investigate. You are there. There for all to see. Neighbours, friends, spouse, relatives, tradesmen, hawkers….you are at their mercy! You are fair game to every one of them.
“Saw you were in; is the kettle on?”
“You’re around, can you take in this parcel for me?”
“Mum/Dad, can you drive me to here, there and everywhere…?”
“Phew, just finished work early so thought I would come and ANNOY THE HELL OUT OF YOU EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVEN’T FINISHED WORK YOURSELF YET AND HAVE AN IMPORTANT DEADLINE TO MEET, BUT HEY DOES THAT MATTER? YOU WORK FROM HOME DON’T YOU? IT MUST BE A PIECE OF CAKE!!!!!!!!!”
Cake? CAKE? I would never describe working from home as a “piece of cake”. For thousands of people in the business community, home is their workplace. A place that makes enormous demands on their concentration, focus and above all time. Working from home and being self-employed requires motivation of the highest degree, robust organisational skills and the ability to fend off everything that does not help you achieve your goals. We are surrounded by so many distractions; social media, spam and the demands of others. So who or what is it that steals your time when working from a home base? It would be easy to blame the distractions and rail against others for making your life difficult, but the truth of it is, is that you have to look to yourself as both the problem and the solution.
The problem you may have created could be that you are making a series of assumptions about the importance of your time, your priorities and your goals. In short everyone else’s priorities matter and yours don’t. So you drop what you are focusing on and attend to the needs of others.
You are half way to the solution when you realise that one of the biggest weapons in your arsenal of time management solutions is to get assertive!
Assert yourself with the stealers of your time!
- Focus on your priorities and put them aside only after considered negotiation with others.
- Say No and mean it!
- Remember other people matter AND you matter too; their time is no more important than yours.
- Create a work schedule and stick to it. Unless its emergency they will wait!
- You get interrupted on average once every eight minutes or seven times and hour – thats three hours a day of interruptions that have little or no value to you. So create strategies to fend off those interruptions.
So…who or what is stealing your time?
